Bad memories about faulty or failing house heaters last a lifetime. Here are a few of mine.

When you are in the market to buy house heaters, you really do want to invest in the best that you can buy. That’s because if your house heaters fail, the situation can jeopardize the health of those in your family who are medically fragile.

For example, a grandma who has heart problems, diabetes, and starting signs of dementia can become even more confused when the temperature in the house drops because the heat went out. Like other patients with dementia, she may decide to go for a walk out into the cold, in an attempt to find another location that is warmer. Once this happens, there are two problems occurring, not one.

I remember a few times when the house heaters failed in places I was renting. The first time occurred in a house in Illinois that was about 60 years old. When the outside temperature went down to 20 below zero, that furnace worked as hard as it could but gave out completely. As a result, it was so cold in the house that the water in the toilet froze. My brother was visiting when the house heater went out and we both wore coats, mittens, and long underwear to bed. We could see our breath in that house that night. He continues to talk about the time when the house heaters went out.

Another time the heaters failed in a house was when I lived in Utah. Three days before I was set to move out of another older house, the house heaters went out. Well, by then, all the beds and most of the furniture was already packed in the moving truck or in storage. A house without heat, without functional home heating, and without furniture is awfully cold!

For some reason, all my friends were out of town and I had to stay there in the cold house. I slept on a massage table wearing a fur coat that kept me warm all night. I’m sure those who hate furs would have had a hay day about the fur, but the bottom line should be practicality. When house heaters go out and the temperature is below zero, you better have some type of fur to keep warm. Blankets don’t often keep the heat in.

When buying your next house heaters, choose ones that are guaranteed, have the consumer reports seal of approval, and don’t buy the cheapest ones! Your memories are dependent on your choice! Solar heat may be a great choice, so do your homework.
